VoIP Apps and Services for iPad

iPad is available in two different version – one is with WiFi and the other one is WiFi + 3G, which is more expensive than the previous one. If you’re considering to purchase the iPad 3G just for the sake of making calls then its time that you reconsider your decision, as we are about to introduce to some of the most amazing apps for iPad which would allow you to make and receive VoIP calls for much less than whats charged by your carrier.

1-. Goober VoIP

Goober Network has launched two apps for iPhone (Which is also valid for iPad), one relates with IM (Instant Messaging) and other is related with VoIP, which lets you make calls inside and outside of US for less.

This app works on WiFi, as well as on a 3G network and charge quite less as compares to other carriers. Their talk time starts at 1 cent/minute, and the first two minutes of the call are free.

This application can be downloaded for free from Apple app store.

2. iCall

iCall is another great application which was released originally for iPhone, but soon its exclusive iPad version would be released too. This app can be used to make free calls inside the US (5 minute) limit for as many times as you want to.

To remove the limit and make international calls, you can always buy their comparatively low-priced talk-time, which would be a lot cheaper as compared to the plans offered by the local carriers.

The service would even give you a US number and CLI once you sign-up for their paid package which starts at $9.99

3. Line2

Line2 is similar to other VoIP application available on app store, which allows you to make local and international calls on landline and mobile for less. The application will charge you $15/month and will provide you these facilities:

  • A dedicated number that finds you on any phone. Get a local number, an 800 number, or transfer an existing number.
  • Powerful office phone features including call waiting, call transfer, caller ID, call forwarding, and more.
  • A second number for your cell phone that allows you to place and receive calls on your cell phone from your Toktumi number. Now you can keep your personal cell number private without having to carry two cell phones.
  • Auto Attendant (”Press 1 for…”) that’s like a 24/7 receptionist – managing and routing incoming calls to the right person or department automatically. -Instant conference calls for up to 20 people — you can even record your conference calls for future reference (windows only).
  • Voicemail by e-mail that simplifies your communications and helps you easily manage your important messages.
  • Virtual Assistant that screens and announces calls and provides different greetings for business and personal callers.
  • PC-based calling for conducting calls and conferences from your PC anywhere worldwide. You can even dial numbers by name or keyword (windows only).
  • Unlimited calling and conferencing to the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as to other Toktumi users worldwide.
  • Simultaneous call forwarding to up to six numbers
  • Ultra-low rates for international calls, e.g. $.02 per minute for calls to China, Italy, and the U.K. See rates here. [via ]

4. JaJah

Another service similar to those mentioned above which allow mobile and landline calls for less. More details are available here: http://iphone.jajah.com

5. TruPhone

TruPhone is the first company which has launched its iPad application until now. You can settle for any of their data plan to make cheap calls worldwide. Here’s a brief press release from them on the launch of their app for iPad:

“Analysts estimate that Apple pre-sold more than 150,000 iPads on its first day, with 2010 sales on track to hit 4 million,” said Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone. “Every device includes Wi-Fi, and soon, 3G connectivity. That makes them a natural fit for Truphone, which has a long history of giving the iPod Touch and iPhone a broad range of new options for staying in touch. We’re excited by the opportunity to extend our suite of convenient, dependable, high-quality voice functionality and IM services to iPad owners.”

6. Skype

Skype has confirmed its application for iPad – Its release date has not been finalized yet. The presence of Skype on iPad would be similar to iPhone, but it could prove to be a great convince for some users who are trying to make free or low-cost calls.

A voip app that tops my list is Freephoo.
http://itunes.apple.com/se/app/freephoo/id411865638?mt=8&ls=1.this can be downloaded without any start up fee and ready to make call the moment it’s installed. Not only can you talk to your friends on freephoo ( which are free calls) but even dial land and mobile numbers.

Voip apps are a great boon for iPad turning it into a giant phone. I have been experimenting with a few of them but the one that has grabbed my attention is Freephoo. Its quick, easy, clear and free. calls between two freephoo users are absolutely free. They have a premium pack for international calls as well.

  • Liam29

I have been using Freephoo of lately and am quite impressed with it. Its free calls between users does not compromise on the voice quality or connectivity. It took me no time to get all my loved ones on this network and they agree with the quality as well.

I like Freephoo as well. In fact its my dear sis whom i should thank for suggesting this to me. I am so carefree while making calls from my iPad coz they all are free. I hardly have faced any kind of disturbance in the calls. A friend said their Premium pack for international calls is also pretty reasonable.

  • ChrisB

Yes Liam, Freephoo is really a good app. As you say they have struck good balance between quality and facility. I use it regularly and really dont have any complaints. WiFi and 3G connectivity is really good. Internatioanl call rates are pretty reasonable as well.
