Samsung has finally made a half-hearted confirmation at an event in New York that all of the latest Galaxy S series of phones – including the Captivate, Epic 4G, Vibrant and Fascinate—will be receiving updates to Android 2.2 “Froyo” later this year, plus compatibility with Flash 10.1. The phones will be shipping with Android 2.1 at launch, so let’s hope the updates are fast-tracked. Sprint, the network provider for these phones, confirms that the Epic will get the update, but it has remained mum on the fate of the other phones.

The specs for the Epic include:

  • A slide-out physical keyboard.
  • It has four touch sensitive buttons along the bottom
  • The Epic 4G has the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display as the Galaxy S and Captivate
  • The Epic 4G will run Android 2.1 at launch, with the 2.2 update not too long after it hits the market. Just like the Captivate, it has the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz skin, which isn’t too distracting and actually polishes up Android a bit. It’s also preloaded with Swype and Qik as well as a few Sprint applications — including the mobile hotspot app, notably.
  • Epic 4G has a VGA front facing cam.
  • The one on the backside will take 5 megapixel shots.
  • The Epic 4G’s 1GHz Hummingbird CPU.

Sprint has promised late summer availability as well, but that is all the currently available on these new phones from Samsung.
