Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

Another way of Jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod touch is here, and this time its with the help of a new and more simple app called blackra1n (Read “Black Rain”). So why this app is attracting so many users? It’s because this software tool can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2.

How to Jailbreak?

  • Update to the latest Firmware using iTunes. Please note that if you want to Unlock your iPhone then DO NOT do that. Upgrading would also update your Baseband which until now could not be cracked. This app would only Jailbreak your device, for unlocking, you’ll have to wait until an app is available from Cydia.
  • Update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone/iPod by using iTunes.
  • Download blackra1n
  • Run the app. If you face any compatibility issue problem in your OS, the right click on it, go to Properties, and check “Windows XP Compatibility mode”. This should resolve that issue.
  • When you’ll launch the app, you’ll see a “Make it Ra1n” Button. Hit it!

  • Now the app would take care of everything from now on. Wait until it reboots.
  • You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

  • Reboot your device.
  • Congratulations! You have successfully Jailbroken your device with firmware 3.1.2. :)

blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

If you face any problem/difficulties during the Installation or are simply confused about anything related, just drop us a comment below, and we’ll try to help you out at our earliest :)

I followed the steps but my phone never rebooted on it's own. I let it sit for 30-45 minutes and it still did not reboot, so i manually turned it back on and blackra1n was not on my iphone. i tried several times and still the same thing. My phone has been jailbroke before but accidently got deleted. Is it possible to jailbreak the same phone twice? Could this be the problem? or any suggestions? thanks.
  • Yes, its possible to Jailbreak an iPhone or iPod touch more than once.
Try upgrading to OS 3.1.3 and follow the tutorial posted here [ http://www.thegeekengineer.com/jailbreak-iphone... ].
I hope that will solve your issue!

I updated to 3.1.2 and blackrain has been running for an hour. The phone shows a usb plug with an arrow pointing at the itunes icon. I'll wait another hour... is there any way to check the progress or show that its working and not "stuck"?

Im having trouble using blackrain it gets stuck on recovery mode. any solutions?
  • Make sure that its been upgraded to 3.1.2 mode, or otherwise it would stuck!
Other reasons might include compatibility issues or services interference. Keep the device up for 30-60 mins after clicking on "Make it Rain".. This should work!

How long does blackrain take when it says running, I'm using Vista with no compatibility, itunes is not running and it just seems to hang there. The screen doesn't change to geohot like it should. Any thoughts/suggestions. I have upgraded to 3.1.2 and my baseband was upgraded. I am not concerned with an unlock. What am I doing wrong
  • It usually takes 30-60 mins. You can also try following things and see if it helps:
    1. End this process, mdnsresponder
    2. Reboot your iPhone and enable the plane mode.
    3. Ensure that within iTunes you have unchecked “Sync Automatically” and under Edit -> Preferences, Devices, choose Prevent iTunes from syncing with Devices Automatically.
