And now that all the Hardware changes have been covered, we come to the other magical ingrediant that makes the iDevices so great, the new iPhone OS 4. Only henceforth, the Steve has decreed that all mortals shall refer to it as iOS 4(in the name of simplification, you see). The new OS brings all the stuff that was expected along with a few surprises thrown in:

  • Multitasking support.
  • Folders
  • Retina Display integration
  • Mail-unified inbox and mail threading support
  • Enhanced camera and photos support
  • Better enterprise integration
    • Better Data protection
    • Mobile Device management
    • Wireless App distribution
    • Multiple Exchange accounts
    • Exchange server 2010
    • SSL VPN support
    • Google, Yahoo and now Bing also supported

Apple to reach 100 million idevices sold benchmark

And now that all the major highlights of the new iOS 4 are detailed, Apple also announces that the 100 millionth iOS device will be sold this month (no doubt spurred on by the release of the new iPhone).

Apple also announced that the iPad iBookstore is also coming to the iPhone now, with the all the new features that we detailed previously.

Another big announcement expected from Apple was its launch of the iAD service on its devices, with support claimed from a multitude of big name companies, like Nissan, target, JC penny… and many more. Apple will launch the service on 1st of July. The big feature that claims for its iAd is its ability to not interfere with your apps, and not to take you away from the apps, and provides the developer’s the ability to earn money on their apps so that they can keep developing cheap, free apps the iTunes appstore.

Steve Jobs wrapped up the iPhone part of the address with the introduction of a new feature that it calls FACETIME. It uses the front facing camera to connect two iPhones over a WiFi connection (work is ongoing on carrier support for the feature). And ended the introduction of the new feature with a call to the chief designer of Apple,  Sir Jonathan Ive. (we predicted this feature previously).
