iBoot: How to Check iPhone 3GS Bootrom Version

If you are struggling with jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS for whatever reasons, you might have stumble upon the word bootrom or iBoot which might have stopped you from trying out the complete tutorial. Most of the tutorials online about jailbreaking your iPhone would suggest to check your bootrom before proceeding, but might not tell you how to do it exactly.

What is Bootrom Version for iPhone

First, let us quickly cover in a glance what bootroom actually is. When you try to restore or update your iPhone to a newer firmware, its version and other details are compared with the bootrom info already stored on your iPhone to make sure that you are updating to an equivalent or higher version of OS. This prevents the hackers from abusing the device (atleast its supposed to) by preventing any attempts to downgrade or change the firmware, which might then lead to several risks for your iPhone.

How to check iPhone 3GS Bootrom Version (For PC)

  • Put your iPhone in DFU Mode (Not Recover Mode)
  • Turn off your iPhone and start iTunes
  • Hold Home and Power Buttons together. After 10 seconds, Keep holding the home button and let go of the power button until you hear a beep on your PC, which means that some device has just been recognized by your computer.
  • After this, you should be able to see your iPhone attached to your PC.
  • Go to the Device Manager [Right click on My Computer >Properties > Select 'Hardware' tab > Device Manager.
  • Double click or press the '+' symbol on the 'Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller' from the list.
  • Select 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver'. Right Click on it and select 'Properties'.
  • Go to 'Details' and then 'Device Instance ID'
  • There, you should be able to find the bootroom version. Should be something like [iBoot-xxx.x]

Now there you’d now what type of bootrom your iPhone 3GS has. If its 359.3, then you have the old one. For 359.3.2 or anything above, you have got the latest one.
