DoubleTwist, coming soon to an Android near you

The popular application, DoubleTwist, dubbed ‘iTunes for Android’, is nearing release. It offers the ability to sync your media with dozens of Android devices. The company has recently released a free native Android version, available on the Android Market for free, which offers users a slick media player, which can handle both video and audio, for their Android phones.

This media player promises to replace the now infamously clunky default media player for the Android, with a clean interface, the ability to import iTunes playlists, and full support for podcasts. That being said, plenty of other replacements to the default media player are already available on the Android Market, so what sets the DoubleTwist apart from the competition?

The CEO of DoubleTwist, Monique Farantzos says the new player works flawlessly with DoubleTwist’s desktop software, in the same way that iPod and iTunes work together. Users can transfer ratings, playcounts, and all the other metadata between their phone and computer. Farantzos also says that online radio and support for wireless media sync (which could be the clincher for many, and a new feature supported by Android 2.2) are coming in the near future.

It’s worth pointing out that Android will soon support over the air streaming of music from their PCs without any physical connection, but most users still prefer to manage and store media locally.
