While everyone is impressed with the Android OS 2.2 “froyo”, one of the most exciting additions to the Android OS isn’t actually slated to feature in this update of the mobile OS; namely the ability to push apps and music over the air to your Android phone.

However, the underlying framework is present in Froyo, so you can demo this feature on your Android 2.2 equipped phone, using Google Code. Apparently, you can get extensions for the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers that can push URLs, Maps and other data directly to your device using your Google account. This way, you can share data between your phone and PC before you head off for a meeting, or better yet, push interesting data to all your friends using a shared Google account, on-the-move.

How to Push Data From PC to Android Froyo 2.2

Use your Android 2.2 phone to download the Google Chrome to Phone Extension application here. (Make sure Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources is checked if you’re installing over USB, or use Barcode Reader (highly recommended!) to scan that QR code.)

Get the Firefox version here.

In your web browser of choice, log into your Google Account.

On your phone, start the Chrome to Phone application.

In the app, add the Google Account you’d like to share with.

Click on “Register Device” to link your account to the Google Chrome to Phone service.

Now just open that web browser, and post something you’d like to share directly to your phone by clicking the new icon in the toolbar.

This way you can continue your PC browsing sessions on-the-go, or send the google route you planned at home to the phone so that you can actually use it to navigate rather than memorize the directions from your PC session.

A new app called SetCPU is now available in Android Marketplace which gives limited control of Mobile’s CPU to the user. The user can then overclock or underclock the processor according to their will. Reportedly, Motorola Droid has been overclocked to 1.2 GHz with the help of this app.

How does it work?

It works by changing several parameters directly in kernel memory to fool both cpufreq and its lowlevel driver. Like the Droid, the Milestone is stable up to 1.2 GHz, with 1.33 GHz being the best I could achieve, albeit completely unstable. For more information please read the KernelModule description. Afterwards I recommend you define better cpufreq policies with the excellent application SetCPU (make sure to use Autodetect, not the Droid/Milestone preset).

For this to work, the module must know two memory addresses that are specific to each kernel. Fortunately, Motorola appears to have reused its kernel on most 2.1 firmwares. Confirmed working are Central Europe, Telus and Brazilian firmwares. Russian and Thai users need to change the kernel, see KernelModule for more information. To port the module to these and other kernels please follow the instructions in the Disassembly page.

Please note that excessive overclocking of the CPU might also result in hardware failure of your device besides improvements in performance, so be careful with that app. Better check with other users online on how much they have overclocked their cellphone before trying it out for yourself.

HTC Desired root has been released recently and it would use the Linux installation on 10MB space to install it, which is called Tiny Core. Rooting HTC Desire is not as easy as rooting HTC Hero but some HTC geek has finally done this hectic task. Lets take a quick look:

The root for HTC Desire is available but it comes with few limitations, like:

The root process will…

flash your device with a new, generic 1.15.405.4 based ROM that has Superuser access

show you how to enter the recovery image in future, allowing you to flash update zips

The root process will NOT…

enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image that can be launched easily by just holding down the volume down button when powering on

enable you to have write access to the /system partition in normal use of the device

Both of these limitations are being worked on of course.

You need to make sure that your device is compatible for the process. Carefully read this:

HTC Desire can be rooted, provided it has a bootloader version of 0.80 or below and ROM version 1.21.xxx.x or below (2 different downloads are available depending on your ROM version). To check this, turn off your device, then turn it back on with the ‘back’ key held. On the second line in green text you will see HBOOT- and then a number. Provided this is 0.80 or below, this guide should work for you.

What you need before beginning the process?

a HTC Desire

a computer running Windows (32 bit recommended, some users have reported issues with x64), OSX or Linux

a microUSB cable

a microSD card (to be made into a ‘goldcard’ – only necessary if your device is an operator supplied device)

the downloads below

The guide to Root HTC Desire with Tiny Core Linux

Follow through these steps, one by one and at the end of it you’ll have a rooted Desire with the latest ROM.

Note: This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.

Make your microSD card into a goldcard by following these instructions (it’s a good idea to back up the contents of your card first!).

Unzip the file you downloaded to a directory, then open a command prompt / terminal window at that directory.

Turn off your HTC Desire, then turn it back on with the ‘back’ button held down. You’ll see ‘FASTBOOT’ written on the screen in a red box. Connect the phone to the computer.

In the terminal window, enter either ‘step1-windows.bat’, ‘./step1-mac.sh’ or ‘./step1-linux.sh’ as appropriate.

When this step has completed, REMOVE THE GOLDCARD and either format it and replace, or replace with a different (non goldcard) microSD.

Navigate to the ‘BOOTLOADER’ and then ‘RECOVERY’ option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.

In the terminal window, enter either ‘step2-windows.bat’, ‘./step2-mac.sh’ or ‘./step2-linux.sh’ as appropriate.

When this has completed, your device should be at the ‘recovery’ screen. Select the ‘wipe’ option, then select the option to apply an update zip from sdcard, and select ‘rootedupdate.zip’. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE!

Entering recovery in future

Included with the root script is a script for entering recovery in the future. To use…

Turn on the device with the volume button held down

Navigate to the ‘RECOVERY’ option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.

In your terminal window, enter either ‘recovery-windows.bat’, ‘./recovery-mac.sh’ or ‘./recovery-linux.sh’ as appropriate.

It is recommended that you do NOT use the ‘USB mount’ functionality in the recovery image!

The password to login is: reverse

Almost there – if this feels a bit long, just consider how short and simple each step is!

Click System (top bar) > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

Enter the password: reverse

Click Applications (top bar) > Accessories > Terminal

Without the quotes, type ‘cd Downloads/openiboot’

Restart your iPhone in Recovery Mode (power off, hold down Home button, connect to USB cable)

Getting Android Working!

Well done on getting this far! This is where the fun beings (credits to WinX Blog for these instructions – link)

In VirtualBox, the Ubuntu Window, go on Devices > USB Devices and select iPhone (Recovery Mode)

In the terminal type (without quotes): ’sudo su’

Enter the password: reverse

In the terminal type ./loadibec openiboot.img3

You’ll see the OpeniBoot screen appear on your iPhone

Hold down the power button a couple of seconds (iPhone)

The bottom option, openiboot console, will become selected

Press Home (iPhone). You’ll see a bunch of text appear and stop at “Welcome to openiboot”

In VirtualBox, the Ubuntu Window, go on Devices > USB Devices and select iPhone (OpeniBoot Mode)

In terminal type su ./oibc

Enter the password: reverse

If this doesn’t work just type: ./oibc

You’ll see the same text from the iPhone in the Terminal

Type (without quotes) ‘nor_read 0×09000000 0×0 1048576′ and press Enter

Wait for it to say Done

Type (without quotes) ‘~norbackup.dump:1048576′

This creates a backup of your NOR memory – save a copy on USB stick, or email it to yourself or something

Type install, press Enter. When this is done you’ve got openiboot installed on your iPhone. You’re done!

Finishing Off

What you’ve achieved up til now is Android files on your iPhone, and then installing openiboot so that you have an option to start iPhone OS or Android when you turn on your phone. Openiboot was necessary because that’s the only way right now that you can boot into Android. Here’s how to finish off and get into Android:

If you still have Terminal open with the oibc still running, just type ‘reboot’, press Enter and skip to step 3

If you don’t have Terminal open, disconnect your phone, turn it off and back on

When openiboot appears press Power button to switch to openiboot console (bottom option)

Hold down the Home button

Android will start to boot, but it might take a while

FAQ

My iPhone is bricked now, how do I fix it? Use the steps in the Bricked Phones section below to make your brick work

It gets stuck at the baseband message? You’re probably using WinSCP for the file transfer. Use FileZilla instead and everything should work. Thanks Siddharth

Bricked Phones!

If your iPhone appears bricked do a DFU restore, using these instructions:
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
2. Turn iPhone off.
3. Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
4. Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
5. A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
6. If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

My iPhone is still bricked! Don’t worry it’s still not fully bricked. Just retry the above DFU steps every 5 minutes or so. People have reported that it can take up to an hour or two before the iPhone enters DFU mode

Still bricked, are you taking the mick? Nope, no mick taking. Connect your iPhone to the mains wall charger. Hold down the power key for at least 10 seconds. Nothing will happen. Take it off the charger and connect to PC using the steps in #1. You should now be in DFU mode.

OMG. Still no luck! Try these steps:
This trick worked under the windows XP.You need install LibUsb-Win32 drives on your PC.
1) Connect your iphone to the PC.
2) Hold Sleep(Power) button and Home button for 10 sec(exactly).
3)Holding the home button and leave power.
4)After few seconds you PC will recognize the usb drivers and itunes will detect the you iphone in restore mode.
Thanks to Macin for that!

Updates

Update 1 (23/04/10 11:05GMT): Added extra step to download fixed openiboot.img3 file in Setting Up Ubuntu section. Thanks to planetbeing
Update 2 (23/04/10 15:26GMT): Merged updated openiboot.img3 with the openiboot.zip download. Should work on all 2G’s now, regardless of jailbreak method.
Update 3 (23/04/10 21:17GMT): Updated Getting Android Working, step to get correct superuser permissions before attempting to write openiboot. Thanks blazter2k

Blacksn0w RC2 for iPhone 3.1.3 on baseband 05.11.07 has been released now and can be downloaded via Cydia.

Blacksn0w RC2 is not an official release by Geohot, but this tool can be easily used to Unlock iPhone 3.1.3 on baseband 05.11.07. Here’s how:

Unlock iPhone 3G/3GS 3.1.3 05.11.07 Baseband

1- Checks your *real* firmware version using your kernel version (this avoids using the reported firmware version which might be “faked”). Only installs if you are really running 3.1.2 or 3.1.3

2- add the source “http://cydia.pushfix.info/” before installation.

3- Checks your baseband version – only installs if 05.11.07

4- Properly backs up and restores your configuration if uninstalled

Skype is now widely available for most of the platform, from Symbian to Android, you’ll find an app for Skype everywhere. Now that Skype also supports Video Calling feature in their mobile apps, the trend of its usage is increasing everyday on a healthy pace.

But the biggest problem with adopting Skype as your main source of making local and International calls is its dependency on high-data-rate network, which is mostly wifi. Whenever you’re on a hotspot, you can easily make a call from Skype, but you can’t rely on it since it will require WiFi which is not available whenever required.

The alternate way could be using a 3G network, whose data rate are sufficient enough to handle a Skype call, but since the competition between cellular service provider is already heated, they won’t let Skype in the race of providing lower calling rates, and therefore most of the 3G service providers won’t allow you to make any call from Skype over your 3G Network. Though AT&T provided this facility in USA.

Now this problem has got a solution, and its available only for iPhone users now. There’s an app which you’ll need to install on your iPhone to make calls from Skype using your 3G Network. Here’s what you need to do:

Jailbreak your iPhone. Search this blog about “Jailbreak iPhone” and you’ll find some guides, like this.

Launch Cydia, and search for VoIPOver3G. Install it.

Turn off WiFi to test the 3G capability. Launch Skype and login to your account.

Now you should be able to make calls with Skype.

If you plan to use it more often, then I recommend buying an unlimited data plan from your carrier, since this application would be sucking a lot of bandwidth.

If you have any questions, or faced any problem during the procedure then please feel free to leave a comment below.
