It seems the nexus one is an unexpected hit with the Developers community! The phone that Google designed to be the flagship Android Device, has turned into a flagship development device!

Google scrapped its plan to sell the Nexus One through its own store in July, six months after trying to rewrite the phone market’s rules. With Android developers, though, to whom Google still sells the phone, it’s become a bit too desirable at least measured by Google’s inventory.

“We blew through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time,” said Android developer evangelist Tim Bray in a blog post Thursday.

They will return, though.

“They’re back-ordered from HTC, who are doing a pretty good job of managing runaway success amid a worldwide AMOLED shortage,” Bray said, referring to the active-matrix organic light-emitting diode technology of the Nexus One’s screen. “Everyone appreciates that it’s important to the platform to get phones in the hands of developers, so we’re working hard on re-stocking the shelves; stand by.”

For all of those mourning the discontinuation of the Google’s first foray into the world of smartphone hardware, mourn no more. The HTC designed Nexus One might not have been as popular as some other Android hardware, some from HTC itself, like the EVO 4G, or the new Droid X, but Google has now announced that it will offer the device as the developer phone of choice.

What this means is the if you are a registered Android developer, you can buy the phone from Google directly, using the phone link after you sign in to your Android developers’ account, all for the princely sum of $529.The phone will come with Android 2.1 as default but will upgrade instantly on startup to the latest version, i. e, Android 2.2 ‘froyo’.

This seemingly steep amount is not really that much for a developer looking to get a pure, unlocked copy of Android without the usual embellishments that some manufacturers are resorting to on their Android devices.

The Android 2.2 (Froyo) is so far the best version of Android OS currently available for Android devices. Though, its officially available for Nexus One so far only but the platform itself is quite powerful and is expected to be available for other devices very soon.

At its launch at the Google I/O 2010 conference, Google announced that Froyo browser is currently the fastest mobile browser available in the market. Their claim was challenged by Engadget and head-to-head comparison was performed between Nexus One running on Froyo and iPhone 4 in terms of browsing speed.

During the comparison, the web browser performance of iPhone 4 couldn’t match the speed offered by Nexus One on Froyo and the new iPhone 4 was put to shame as they failed the test.

Here are the results from the comparison:

The sweetest things keep on coming to the Nexus One users. Things that other Android Users drool over are flavor of the day for Nexus One users. And why shouldn’t it be, when this is the benchmark Android phone, the one that Google makes and sells itself.

Android 2.2 latest build on Nexus One

Now the latest build of Android 2.2 aka Froyo, Build FRF91 is being rolled out on the Nexus One. This over-the-air update is being rolled out now, so be patient and hopefully you will have it soon.

Those among who have mutilated your current Android builds via rooting, Custom recovery modes or fancy custom ROMs, will not be notified by the OTA santa for your bad deeds. You will have to repent for your sins by performing a rollback to stock builds FRF50, FRF83 or stock Android 2.1 to get the upfate from the Google santa. For those of you too impatient to wait for the Google notification, just follow the instructions below to get your hands on a spanking new build of Android 2.2 now on your Nexus One.

Update using official patch file
You must be runnning the stock FRF85B release with stock recovery. Copy that file to the root of your sdcard, rename to update.zip, launch recovery (power on with volume down held), press power and volume up when the warning triangle icon appears then select ‘apply update.zip’.
Download: Google

Update.zip to flash with custom recovery
This is the totally stock FRF91 repacked as update.zip. The radio hasn’t changed since FRF50, so if you are using it, you can keep it and install the noradio version.

Download:
- without radio image: Download Links (md5sum: 041b1e21433e636340ca6b56f141a315)

Root
To root FRF91, just flash this update.zip (contains busybox, superuser.apk, su, unsecured boot.img) (md5sum: c6c27598c210576792d6d56738a2edde)
Addons pack
Just flash this update.zip (md5sum: 7cf8074d3685681728043f367e6b35fd) contains :
- cyanogenmod 6.0 kernel (2.6.34 overclockable to 1113mhz using setcpu)
- dev tools in xbin
- hudge apn list
The three updates can be flashed at the same time (I mean without rebooting between the flashes), just flash it in this order: base system, root then addons and reboot

AT&T has finally rolled out Over the Air (OTA) update of Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85 build to their customers who own Nexus One. Its a gradual roll out of updates so those of you who haven’t received it yet don’t need to panic, you will soon receive a notification.

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone’s notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones – and most users will receive the notification by the end of the week . We hope you enjoy these new features.

If you have rooted your Nexus One with custom ROM, then you won’t receive the update. You would be required to roll back to the FRF50 or FRF83 in order to receive one. A hack is now available on Internet which lets you shoot 720p High Definition video from your Nexus One.

This feature is currently available for those Nexus One users only who haven’t yet upgraded their firmware to Froyo. So far this hack has not been yet shifted to Froyo, but chances are that soon it will be available for both firmwares.

iPhone 4, which was just released in the WWDC 2010 conference along with iOS4 is currently the center of attraction for all mobile application developers. They consider this move from Apple as remarkable, and think that this release is enough to rule their already-captured dominance in the market.

But what about the other old competitors of iPhone? What upgrades have they released so far to compete with the best? To summarize it in a chart, we are posting all the latest information about them in the picture below. In the comparison, we are considering iPhone 4, Nexus One by Google, Evo 4G and Droid Incredible by HTC.

While everyone is impressed with the Android OS 2.2 “froyo”, one of the most exciting additions to the Android OS isn’t actually slated to feature in this update of the mobile OS; namely the ability to push apps and music over the air to your Android phone.

However, the underlying framework is present in Froyo, so you can demo this feature on your Android 2.2 equipped phone, using Google Code. Apparently, you can get extensions for the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers that can push URLs, Maps and other data directly to your device using your Google account. This way, you can share data between your phone and PC before you head off for a meeting, or better yet, push interesting data to all your friends using a shared Google account, on-the-move.

How to Push Data From PC to Android Froyo 2.2

Use your Android 2.2 phone to download the Google Chrome to Phone Extension application here. (Make sure Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources is checked if you’re installing over USB, or use Barcode Reader (highly recommended!) to scan that QR code.)

Get the Firefox version here.

In your web browser of choice, log into your Google Account.

On your phone, start the Chrome to Phone application.

In the app, add the Google Account you’d like to share with.

Click on “Register Device” to link your account to the Google Chrome to Phone service.

Now just open that web browser, and post something you’d like to share directly to your phone by clicking the new icon in the toolbar.

This way you can continue your PC browsing sessions on-the-go, or send the google route you planned at home to the phone so that you can actually use it to navigate rather than memorize the directions from your PC session.

Previously, we reported about the new Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo update rollout for Nexus One device which was available via OTA (Over the Air). The users of Nexus One were getting notifications on their cell phone about the update and using it, they could have easily jumped to the Android 2.2 version.

But that was not available for everyone. Google has started to roll out the Android 2.2 version to its Nexus One users in several phases and not all of them would get it at the same time, so if you haven’t got your notification yet, you can either wait for it, or download Android 2.2 (Froyo) manually from Google and install it on your Nexus One.

According to XDA-Developers, it only works if you have a “non-rooted stock ERE27 system” Nexus One.
