Apple has released iOS 4.3.5 for its iOS devices that is mainly meant to patch some under-the-hood issues. No major developments or features have been introduced in this update.

Since iOS 4.3.5 is very similar to its predecessors, the tools that were used to jailbreak those firmware would work fine with this one as well. So this means that the current version of Redsn0w is capable of Jailbreaking iOS 4.3.5 on iPhone 3GS/4, iPad and iPod touch 3G/4G. Redsn0w won’t be of much help if you’re trying to jailbreak iOS on your iPad 2.

The bad news about this jailbreak is that its tethered, which means that if you restart your iOS device, everything goes back to the original condition – you lose your Jailbreak! So you have to make your best effort to avoid rebooting your device at any cost.

So here’s the step-by-step working guide of how to jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 using Redsn0w on iPhone 3GS/4, iPad and iPod touch 3G/4G.

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.3.5

Download following files:

Download iOS 4.3.5 and iOS 4.3.4

iTunes 10.4 [Download]

Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 [Windows users]

Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 [Mac users]

tethered-boot utility [Download]

After downloading the files given above, start Redsn0w. Browse and select iOS 4.3.4 firmware that you have just downloaded.

Once Redsn0w recognized your firmware, click Next and you will be taken to a new window. Check on Install Cydia and then click Next.

At this step, Redsn0w will ask you to turn off your device and plug it in to your computer. Once you do, follow the instructions on the screen to put your device in the DFU mode.

Once you have entered the DFU mode, Redsn0w will take care of the rest. Simply wait till all the process finish, you will have yourself a jailbroken device soon after that.

As we all know that the iPod nano touch (6G) has been hacked and now several modifications are possible on it, one of them is to install the custom firmware on it, that is Jailbreaking the device.

The process starts with putting your iPod nano touch into the recovery mode, by simply holding the iPod’s restart button until you see a black screen followed by a double reboot.

More details of the process is given below:

From here, Troughton-Smith modified the popular jailbreak utility iRecovery to work with the non-iOS iPod nano. After this, he used the newly modified iRecovery application to install an extracted operating system file onto the iPod nano (video above). This file was built to boot the iPod nano into a white screen mode and that is exactly what it did.

This obviously does not sound groundbreaking but in reality it is. An encrypted firmware file was just installed on an iPod nano and functioned as intended by the installer. This discovery is a step in the right direction for custom made firmware files to be installed on the iPod nano and is the best evidence yet for a possible iPod nano ‘jailbreak.’

A hacker/developer close to 9to5mac has let us know that Troughton-Smith’s discovery is a big step in the right direction, but before any custom firmware can actually be installed and used through this method an actual exploit in the iPod nano OS will be need to be found. To summarize, the method to install custom firmware on the iPod nano is present, but the jailbreak community is in need of an exploit to actually make this method useful.

According to a developer James Whelton, iPod nano touch (sixth generation) has been jailbroken already and now it has made a whole bunch of stuff possible to do on an iPod touch.

Though the basic would be to remove and add apps in there but the good thing is that it won’t be limited to it. In future, we might get games, video, calendar and a lot more on our iPod nano touch.

The developer claims that he found files pertaining to games, apps, video, and calendars within the iPod nano’s file system leading to the conclusion that the nano’s operating system is definitely a hybrid between the old iPod nano operating system and iOS. The core is the old system while the layer on top resembles iOS. The developer says he will be posting more information about the nano “jailbreak” in the next few days so stay tuned.

Here’s a video from the developer demonstrating the iPod Nano Touch sixth generation Springboard icon hack.

For all those interested in getting their device running on iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken, we have got some good news for them. Redsn0w has brought untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.7b2. Here’s how to do that:

We’re about to release the first beta using this new “backup method”, which redsn0w calls “Jailbreak Monte”. Here are some important points:

This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release! Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!

For the same reason, please don’t participate if you rely on the ultrasn0w carrier unlock. Wait for the final version!

Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.

This very first beta1 is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G.

Cydia must have your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on file. (As we approach a general release, we’ll provide a way to let you use locally saved hashes too).

You must already have the usbmuxd software installed and running on your Mac (this requirement will eventually go away too). The correct invocation of the relay is just as that page says: “./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222”. If the relay isn’t installed or running correctly by the time the redsn0w ramdisk has started, you’ll need to restore to stock FW again to try it again. Please test it beforehand to save yourself some time!

Please leave all feedback in the comments below (we really need your feedback to help develop it into a stable release!)

The download link is:

redsn0w 0.9.7b1 (OS X). Select “Jailbreak Monte” to try out the untether.

KNOWN BETA1 BUGS:

Task switcher causes Springboard crash (temporary workaround is to use SBSettings process list)

iPod player only works on ipt4g right now

Bluetooth currently disabled due to sandbox problem

Now, just hours after the official iOS 4.1 ipsw was posted to Apple’s servers, the Dev Team has discovered a bootrom exploit that will used in the iOS 4.1 jailbreak. The Dev Team’s Musclenerd tweeted,

“Crazy timing that @pod2g got latest exploit just as 4.1 went public (lots of work left…keep away from 4.1 for now!).”

According to Redmond Pie, this exploit won’t be something that Apple will be able to patch as quickly as the previous PDF exploit:

Also, the best thing about a low-level bootrom exploit is that Apple wont be able to patch it simply by releasing a new firmware update. Instead, it will require Apple to release a revised hardware version of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and the iPod touches with new bootroms in order to patch the bootrom exploit.

This is good news for iPhone 4 users that want the fixes included in the iOS 4.1 update (proximity sensor, Bluetooth connection issues), while at the same time providing access to the wealth of “underground apps” and customizations that can be had with unauthorized app stores like Cydia.

You’ll just have to be patient as the Dev Team works its magic to complete work on the iOS 4.1 jailbreak.

Apple is apparently ramping up its battle to prevent iPhone and iPod owners from jailbreaking their devices.

The company has applied for a patent, titled “Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorized Users of an Electronic Device,” that covers a series of security measures to automatically protect devices from thieves and other “unauthorized users.” Unauthorized users apparently applies to those who engage in jailbreaking, which allows devices to run apps not approved by the company producing the operating system–such as Apple, the main target of such bypasses.

The application also describes a variety of measures that could be used to help identify the unauthorized user, including the activation of a camera that could capture and geotag the device’s surroundings, and perhaps current user, and transmit that information to a remote device:

In some embodiments, an unauthorized user can be detected by comparing the identity of the current user to the identities of authorized users of the electronic device. For example, a photograph of the current user can be taken, a recording of the current user’s voice can be recorded, the heartbeat of the current user can be recorded, or any combination of the above. The photograph, recording, or heartbeat can be compared, respectively, to a photograph, recording, or heartbeat of authorized users of the electronic device to determine whether they match. If they do not match, the current user can be detected as an unauthorized user.

When unauthorized use has been detected, “access to particular applications can be restricted, access to sensitive information can be restricted, sensitive information can be erased from the electronic device…,” the application states, effectively wiping and bricking the device.

In July, U.S. Copyright Office ruled that bypassing a manufacturer’s protection mechanisms to allow “handsets to execute software applications” no longer violates federal copyright law. However, while the U.S. Copyright Office has declared the software legal, Apple has repeatedly discouraged users from loading such a bypass, reminding them that doing so will void their device’s warranty.

The new firmware for Apple devices that has been launched before to cover the exploit used by JailbreakME has now been patched by Apple with the release of iOS 4.0.2. The new firmware update was already made available for iPhone and iPod touch 3G, but now its also available for iPhone 2G users.

There might be a few other changes in it besides the obvious cure for jailbreak hole, but if you love your iPod touch 2G jailbroken, then our advice is that do not upgrade, or else you would stuck with a jailbroken iPod touch.
A new version of iOS is out for iPhone and iPod touch, dubbed as iOS 4.0.2. If you have jailbroken this firmware on your iPhone already, then you must now be in a mood to unlock your iPhone to catch a signal from your favorite carrier.

Fortunately, the case with the new update is that they have not updated the baseband, which means that tools which were used to crack the baseband of iOS 4.0.1 firmware would work just fine for this baseband, which is baseband 05.13.04.

To unlock your iPhone on iOS 4.0.2 with Ultrasn0w, simply follow the steps given below:

Before unlocking your iPhone, make sure that its already jailbroken. If not, then follow this guide closely on how to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4.0.2

As Redsn0w wouldn’t activate your iPhone, you would have to do it yourself by using the original carrier SIM. If you don’t have one, then see our post on how to activate iPhone without using the original SIM.

When you are done with activation, simply follow the steps posted here on how to unlock your iPhone with Ultrasn0w and you should have an unlocked iPhone in the end if you have followed every step properly.
