Apple WWDC, expected announcements

On Monday, Steve Jobs will deliver the keynote address at the WWDC, a yearly conference of the key Apple developers, in a ritual now better known as Stevenote by some in the media.

Expect some major announcements regarding the iPhone, Apple TV and other Apple ventures.

Here’s what we expect that the CEO will reveal on Monday.

iPhone

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 4G/HD on Monday, along with the latest update to its iPhone OS 4. While the release of the new OS is confirmed, the rumors of the new iPhone launching at the same event have been circulating for quite a while now.

The new phone is expected to feature things like front facing VGA camera, HD video recording, a better camera with LED flash at the back and a new industrial look courtesy of Jonathan Ive.

Many of the features that iPhone OS 4.0 brings to the mix include things like multitasking (finally), folders and other enterprise tools, along with tethering support,  and maybe a new default app that uses the new front facing camera for video chats.

Of course the actual sale date will be some weeks after the unveiling at WWDC. Predicting the sale date of an Apple product is always tough, but sources suggest a strong possibility that it will be on sale by the end of June.

Verizon iPhone

We could see some announcement on this due to the sheer mass of speculation on the internet, even though we must point out that this deal is only in the early stages, and that this WWDC will most likely concentrate on the new iPhone itself, and that Verizon support might get announced at some other event later in the year.

We’re hoping that we’re wrong about the Verizon iPhone, but we suggest you don’t get your hopes up.

Apple and the Cloud

Is this the year that apple finally takes the Cloud seriously? It would be an opportune time to announce its cloud initiatives, when Google recently announced that its Android OS 2.2 will stream music directly from your desktop. And remember that Steve Jobs has a nasty habit of ignoring innovations until Apple joins the bandwagon, and that is exactly the case with cloud computing, as apple recently closed down LaLa, a music streaming service,  and this could point to a Cloud based version of the iTunes.

Other expected announcement

Another announcement that is well overdue is the expected Apple TV initiative that Steve Jobs mentioned at his recent interview, and on that too this would be the best time to announce something as Google recently announced its Google TV initiative.

Also, the MacBook Air hasn’t been upgraded in the latest batch of MacBook updates, and maybe the Apple Safari browser will finally get some extensions.
